March 9 – End of May 2008 – Art Exhibit by Southwest Michigan Watercolor Society

Each season Pierce Cedar Creek Institute features a local artist or photographer. This season, March 9 through the end of May, the Institute will be featuring members of the South West Michigan Watercolor Society (SWMWS).

The SWMWS was organized to encourage a better understanding and appreciation of watercolor painting through informative program meetings, yearly watercolor workshops, and membership exhibitions. SWMWS members represent a highly diverse group of artist with different levels of expertise who come from many southwest Michigan communities.

A public reception will be held on Sunday, April 13, from 11 am to 3 pm. If you would like to attend brunch on that day, please call the Institute to make reservations.

Sunday, April 13, 2008 – Sunday Brunch

Choose from delicious menu selections and enjoy the beautiful view of the natural surroundings from the dining room.  Pre-registration and payment are required. An informative program will take place at 12:15 pm.

Brunch Program: The Mystery of the Massasauga Rattlesnake

How dangerous is the Massasauga? What is happening to its needed habitat? Join biologist David A. Wooten, Washtenaw Community College Professor, for an afternoon discussion on this unique Michigan snake. We'll discuss the natural history, venom toxicity, conservation, and mystery around the Massasauga and have all your questions answered.

Time: Brunch is Filled - The program on Massasauga Rattlesnakes is
                                    still open to the public.

Saturday, April 19 – Trees for Life

Have you had a baby at Pennock Hospital since October 2007? If so, come to the Institute to pick up your commemorative oak tree seedling as part of the Institute’s Trees for Life program. A new life is the start of something very special. As your newborn grows, so will his or her tree. Nature is a part of all of us and as vital to a healthy life as love, food, and air. Help your family make this important connection to nature as you give a very special gift to your newborn that will grow as strong and healthy as your little one does.

Saturday, April 26 – Renewable Energy Series: Solar Panel Workshop

Bob Kildea will teach you how to build your own small photovoltaic system (solar panel).  All supplies for the system will be provided as part of the workshop.  The portable solar system that you will build can provide enough energy to power a small TV or computer, power tools, or many other appliances that use no more than 500 watts.

Pre-registration and payment are required.  The workshop is limited to 12 people.

Cost: $295 for the workshop and the 15-watt system

Saturday, May 3 - Spring Ephemerals Hike

Join us for this special adventure for exploring Little Grand Canyon for nature’s spring gems such as bloodroot, spring beauty, and trillium. The Little Grand Canyon is one of Barry County’s glacial wonders. It is a 150-foot glacial ravine that was carved out by melt waters thousands of years ago. This nearly undisturbed area boasts a spring display of color and sound that is unrivaled in the area. The terrain is moderately difficult and should not be attempted by those who have difficulties walking up and down steep terrain. Please dress for the spring weather and wear sturdy shoes. Pre-registration is required and registration is limited to 15 people per hike. Extra hike times have been added due to the popularity of this annual event.

Time: Hike times are 9 am, 10:30 am, noon, and 1:30 pm.  Registration is limited to 15 people per hike.

Saturday, May 10 - Project Wet Workshop

Project WET (Water Education for Teachers) is an international, nonprofit, interdisciplinary, water education program for formal and non-formal educators of students ages 5 to 18. The program facilitates and promotes awareness, appreciation, knowledge, and stewardship of water resources through the dissemination of classroom-ready teaching aids. Sunday, May 11 - Native Plant Sale

Designs by Nature is back to host the popular native plant sale.  The plants featured are Michigan native and important additions to your landscape.  Available for purchase are prairie forbs (wildflowers), grasses and sedges, and other woodland native plants.

This special holiday brunch will include special menu selections including chef carved prime rib and an expanded dessert station. Pre-registration and payment are required. This brunch fills up fast, so be sure to make your reservation early. An informative program will take place at 12:15 pm.

Brunch Program: The Effects of Invasive Plants on Native Plant Communities Join Vern Stevens from Designs By Nature for this informative talk covering why invasive plants are becoming widespread in Michigan, what they are doing to the native plant communities, and how to control/manage their impact.

Saturday, May 17 - Introductory Renewable Energy Seminars

Are you interested in learning the basics of renewable energy systems and how they work in Michigan? The Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association’s (GLREA), renewable energy seminars, hosted by Pierce Cedar Creek Institute, will answer commonly asked questions about three of the most popular types of renewable energy applications: solar heating, solar electricity, and wind electricity. Instructor Mark Bauer of Bauer Power, Inc. has many years of experience in installing, repairing and designing renewable energy systems. Registration fees are based on the seminars that you attend. Saturday, May 24 - Birding for Beginners

Birding is a great reason to get outside and explore our natural world. It sharpens our observation skills, makes us think, and opens us to new experiences. Join Interpretive Naturalist Doug Wright for this early morning hike as we go in search of our feathered friends. The hike is designed to help the beginning bird enthusiast become a better birder. Learn where to look for birds, tips on how to identify birds in the field, and basic binocular use.

Friday, May 30 - Michigan Reptiles and Amphibians presented by The Outdoor Discovery Center

Can turtles really breathe through their bottom? Do you get warts from touching toads? Can snakes be poisonous? These and many more questions will be answered as you explore the life history of reptiles and amphibians with a focus on animals present in Michigan. A number of live animals will be used during this program. After the presentation, there will be hands-on time possible with many of the live animals from the program. Live toads, frogs, salamanders, snakes and turtles will be included in the presentation.
