Students conducting research

Biological Field Station

Pierce Cedar Creek Institute operates a field station and provides opportunities for research and education in the environmental sciences. The Biological Field Station works with a consortium of fourteen colleges and universities from Michigan and Indiana. Working with faculty from each of the consortium institutions, the Institute is able to provide funding for undergraduate research and a classes for pre-service and in-service teachers.

The natural areas at the Institute have a number of valuable qualities that make them excellent resources for education and research. The Institute's 661 acres of wetlands, forests, and prairie areas contain a great diversity of native flora and fauna. For a better understanding of some of the ecosystems and the biological diversity at the Institute, visit our species inventory page.

Some research support and equipment may also be available. Institute facilities and property are available for season-long research projects, or for afternoon or multi-day field trips with overnight accommodations. The Institute's campus includes a 1400-square-foot laboratory, two classrooms, housing for up to 48, a dining hall, and several meeting rooms. The facilities are up-to-date and comfortable.

We welcome research projects from outside our consortium. All researchers are required to complete and file a research agreement before beginning any research on site. Students considering using Pierce Cedar Creek Institute for research or a class should feel free to visit and scout out the property. We would also be happy to meet with interested researchers to discuss potential project. Contact Hugh Brown, field station director, at (269) 721-4434 to arrange a visit.

Internship opportunities are available for college students. Stewardship interns work closely with staff to manage the Institute's property and conduct educational programs.
